Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D.
My first introduction to the work of Dr. Robert Schoch was the 1993 documentary, Mystery of the Sphinx. Narrated by Charlton Heston, the film showcased the effort to disprove the inaccurate dating methodologies of the Sphinx currently accepted by Egyptologists and to provide the world with an accurate date of its construction. Schoch, along with John Anthony West, studied the erosional patterns and discerned the weathering present was only possible due to years of torrential rainfall, a weather pattern that has not been present in the Giza plateau for thousands of years. This controversial way of thinking challenged the uniformitarian views of the modern Egyptological infrastructure and Schoch found himself under fire.
That was 1993 and the insidious attacks from opposing schools of thought have not thwarted Schoch in the slightest. His latest effort, Forgotten Civilization chronicles his journeys to Easter Island, Gobekly Tepe, and Egypt. His focal point is the abrupt ending of the ice age and Schoch cites this cataclysm being caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). Schoch thoroughly explains the fourth state of matter: plasma. Plasma permeates the entire universe and when powered by a solar outburst, can have detrimental effects on our planet.
I found the examination of the Rongorongo script (the undecipherable language of the indigenous Rapa Nui peoples of Easter Island) to be particularly fascinating. Schoch postulates that the reason the script has yet to be deciphered may be due to the script not being a written language at all – but more so a visual documentation of plasma events from our distant past. He weaves together examples from antiquity and cites droves of sources and peer reviewed articles as his evidence. If his theory is correct, our species needs to re-think the accepted notion that meteors and comets are the primary source of our planet’s mass extinction events.
Forgotten Civilization is brilliantly thought out and the author presents an engrossing take on the dynamics of our planet. The implications of coronal mass ejections (CME’s) and plasma discharges upon the Earth are terrifying, to say the least. Schoch thoroughly explains the adverse effects of previous incidents and paints a vivid picture of how crippling such an event would be to our technologically dependent and modern society. The book is eye opening and thought provoking. We give Forgotten Civilization four stars.
